BMW Unveils Second-Generation X2: Electric iX2 Joins the Party

Posted on March 12, 2024

BMW is shaking things up in the compact segment with the all-new second-generation X2 Sports Activity Coupe (SAC). This new iteration boasts a bolder design, innovative technology, and most notably, the introduction of the first-ever fully-electric iX2 variant.

Striking Design Improvements

The X2 takes on a more muscular and dynamic stance with increased dimensions compared to its predecessor. A wider track, larger wheels, and a more prominent grille contribute to its confident presence. Standard M Sport specification adds a sporty flair with aggressive air intakes, M-specific side skirts, and a rear diffuser.

Inside, the cabin features a driver-centric layout with a curved display integrating a 10.25-inch information display and a 10.7-inch control display. The new BMW Operating System 9 provides a user-friendly interface with customizable features and quick access menus.

All-Electric Power with the iX2

The BMW iX2 is a significant addition to the X2 lineup, offering a range of up to 283 miles (WLTP) on a single charge. Two variants will be available: the eDrive20 with a front-mounted electric motor and the xDrive30 with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup delivering 313 horsepower. Both variants utilize the latest BMW eDrive technology, ensuring efficient power delivery and rapid charging capabilities.

Traditional Powertrains Still Available

For those seeking a petrol-powered option, the X2 offers a 300-horsepower M35i xDrive with a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine and a 48-volt mild hybrid system for enhanced performance and fuel economy. Additionally, a 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine with mild hybrid assistance powers the sDrive20i variant.

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems

The new X2 prioritizes safety with a comprehensive suite of driver assistance systems. These include features like automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, and adaptive cruise control.

Focus on Comfort and Convenience

The X2 boasts a spacious interior with increased legroom and headroom for all passengers. Standard features like automatic climate control and a panoramic sunroof (optional) enhance comfort and create an airy ambiance. A variety of connectivity options, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, keep occupants entertained and informed.

Pricing and Availability

The BMW X2 starts at £40,515 OTR for petrol variants, while the iX2 begins at £51,615 OTR. Order books are open now, with deliveries commencing in March 2024.

Overall, the second-generation BMW X2 lineup caters to a wider range of preferences with its combination of a compelling design, cutting-edge technology, and a choice between powerful petrol and zero-emission electric powertrains.

Henry Benz isn't your average automotive journalist. He's not obsessed with horsepower or zero-to-sixty times. His passion lies in the quiet hum of electric motors, the surge of instant torque, and the thrill of a world hurtling towards a sustainable future. Henry is the EV evangelist, your plug-in pal, and the guy who will make you fall in love with the world of electric vehicles, one test drive at a time.

Henry's journey began in the golden age of muscle cars. He spent his youth wrenching on classic V8s, his nose forever stained with grease and his ears ringing with the roar of internal combustion. But as the climate crisis loomed larger, a seed of doubt sprouted in his gearhead heart. Could there be a way to enjoy the thrill of the open road without sacrificing the planet?

That's when Henry discovered the world of EVs. He was captivated by the silent power, the instant acceleration, and the sleek, futuristic designs. He devoured every article, watched every documentary, and hopped behind the wheel of every electric car he could find. He was hooked.
