BYD Makes Waves with EXPLORER NO.1: A Green Leviathan Set to Redefine EV Shipping

Posted on January 17, 2024

In a historic maiden voyage that sent ripples through the world of electric vehicles, BYD, the global leader in NEVs and power batteries, christened its first dedicated roll-on/roll-off (ro-ro) carrier, EXPLORER NO.1. This colossal vessel marks a pivotal moment not just for BYD‘s own logistics, but for the future of sustainable maritime transportation.

The 199.9-meter behemoth, officially delivered at Yantai Port on January 10th, sailed out from Shenzhen’s Xiaomo International Logistics Port on its inaugural journey. With a staggering capacity of 7,000 vehicles, EXPLORER NO.1 alleviates BYD’s dependence on strained global ro-ro shipping resources, ensuring smoother delivery of their electric cars internationally. But this ship is more than just a logistical solution; it’s a testament to BYD’s unwavering commitment to green innovation.

Equipped with a cutting-edge dual-fuel system that seamlessly blends LNG and conventional fuel, EXPLORER NO.1 navigates the waters with a significantly reduced carbon footprint. This eco-conscious design extends beyond its propulsion system – seven more vessels, each integrating BYD’s proprietary energy storage batteries and shaft generator technology, are scheduled to join the fleet over the next two years. This bold move not only solidifies BYD’s leadership in sustainable shipping but also sets a new standard for the entire industry.

Wang Junbao, General Manager of BYD Corporate Division, hailed the maiden voyage as a pivotal moment for both BYD and China’s booming NEV industry. He emphasized the ship’s role in expanding BYD’s overseas reach, but also hinted at a broader vision: “We plan to… engage in open partnerships, forging a new epoch for Chinese automakers on the international stage.” The EXPLORER NO.1, then, becomes a symbol of collaboration, a bridge between China’s technological prowess and the global demand for innovative green solutions.

The BYD Seal

BYD’s commitment to environmental consciousness extends far beyond this landmark ship. In 2023, the company shattered records, exporting 242,765 NEVs, witnessing a staggering 334.2% year-on-year growth. Their total annual NEV sales surged to over 3.02 million units, cementing their position as the world’s undisputed champion in electric vehicle sales. Today, BYD’s green footprint covers six continents, impacting over 70 countries and 400 cities.

The EXPLORER NO.1 is more than just a ship; it’s a tangible manifestation of BYD’s unwavering dedication to a greener future. As this leviathan of innovation cuts through the waves, it paves the way for a world where sustainable transportation reigns supreme. With its ambitious vision and relentless pursuit of technological advancement, BYD is not just riding the wave of change; they’re steering the entire industry towards a cleaner, more sustainable future.
