BYD Unveils Cutting-Edge Electric Double-Decker Bus for London

Posted on May 22, 2024

BYD, the global leader in electric vehicles (EVs) and batteries, has unveiled its latest innovation – the BYD BD11, a fully-electric double-decker bus designed specifically for the London market. This debut marks a significant milestone for BYD‘s UK presence and is expected to revolutionize public transportation in the capital city.

The BD11 boasts several industry-leading features, including the revolutionary Blade Battery technology. This innovative battery offers exceptional range, fast charging capabilities, and unparalleled safety thanks to its lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) cathode material. The Blade Battery integrates seamlessly into the chassis, reducing weight and maximizing passenger space. Furthermore, it surpasses rigorous safety standards, achieving thermal stability and withstanding extreme temperatures, minimizing the risk of fire or explosion.

Performance and efficiency are paramount in the BD11. Dual 150kW electric in-wheel motors provide responsive acceleration and power, particularly on inclines. These motors utilize cutting-edge Silicon Carbide technology for exceptional efficiency and are cleverly combined with a 6-in-1 controller, simplifying electronics for enhanced reliability. An Integrated Thermal Management System optimizes energy usage by recovering waste heat, further boosting efficiency.

For operators, the BYD BD11 offers flexible and rapid charging solutions. Multiple charging ports are conveniently located on the sides and roof of the bus, while a pantograph enables rapid charging at up to 500kW, achieving a full charge in just two hours. This flexibility ensures the BD11 seamlessly integrates into existing urban transport networks.

Passenger comfort and safety are not an afterthought. The BD11 incorporates a comprehensive suite of Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS) like emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, and lane departure warnings. The spacious cabin features transparent stairwells, smooth surfaces for easy boarding and alighting, and ample legroom for a comfortable journey.

Connectivity plays a crucial role in the BD11. The bus is equipped with advanced features like over-the-air (OTA) updates, allowing for remote software upgrades and system optimization. This eliminates the need for frequent service center visits and ensures the BD11 remains at the forefront of technological advancements.

Frank Thorpe, Managing Director of BYD UK Commercial Vehicles, expressed his enthusiasm: “The introduction of the BYD BD11 marks a pivotal moment for BYD in the UK’s public transport sector. We are proud to offer this innovative technology, providing operators with a modern, eco-friendly solution and Londoners with the opportunity to travel on clean, non-polluting buses.”

The BYD BD11 represents a significant leap forward in electric double-decker bus technology. With its focus on safety, efficiency, passenger comfort, and cutting-edge features, the BD11 is poised to transform London’s public transportation landscape and contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable future.

Henry Benz isn't your average automotive journalist. He's not obsessed with horsepower or zero-to-sixty times. His passion lies in the quiet hum of electric motors, the surge of instant torque, and the thrill of a world hurtling towards a sustainable future. Henry is the EV evangelist, your plug-in pal, and the guy who will make you fall in love with the world of electric vehicles, one test drive at a time.

Henry's journey began in the golden age of muscle cars. He spent his youth wrenching on classic V8s, his nose forever stained with grease and his ears ringing with the roar of internal combustion. But as the climate crisis loomed larger, a seed of doubt sprouted in his gearhead heart. Could there be a way to enjoy the thrill of the open road without sacrificing the planet?

That's when Henry discovered the world of EVs. He was captivated by the silent power, the instant acceleration, and the sleek, futuristic designs. He devoured every article, watched every documentary, and hopped behind the wheel of every electric car he could find. He was hooked.
