The electric vehicle (EV) revolution continues to gain momentum, with global sales reaching new heights in August. According to the latest Global Electric Vehicle Tracker from New AutoMotive, nearly one in every six vehicles sold during the month was fully electric.
China, the world’s largest EV market, saw a remarkable 81% surge in plug-in hybrid sales compared to the previous August. Meanwhile, the country’s petrol and diesel market experienced a significant 18% decline, indicating a growing shift towards electric power.
The United States, the second-largest EV market, also recorded impressive sales figures, reaching over 120,000 units sold in August. This represents a 26% increase compared to the same period last year and marks the highest monthly sales for 2024.
In Europe, the UK’s BEV market experienced a 10% year-on-year growth, while petrol vehicle sales plummeted by 20%. Other European countries, such as Belgium and Denmark, also saw significant gains in EV market share.
However, Germany, once a leading player in the EV market, is still recovering from the chaotic withdrawal of consumer incentives at the end of 2023. Despite showing signs of improvement, its market share remains relatively low compared to other European countries.
Ben Nelmes, CEO of New AutoMotive, commented on the global EV trends: “Despite the challenges faced by Germany, global sales of electric cars continue to rise. The strong performance of the US market is particularly encouraging, and it’s evident that the shift towards electric vehicles is gaining momentum worldwide.”
Nelmes also expressed disappointment with the EU’s recent decision to introduce tariffs on imported EVs, stating that it will not hinder the inevitable rise of this technology. He emphasized the importance of governments adopting policies that promote cleaner, cheaper transportation.
New AutoMotive’s monthly tracker provides comprehensive data on EV sales, targets, incentives, and regulations in 42 major automotive markets. The detailed report breaks down vehicle registrations by fuel type, manufacturer, and market share, offering valuable insights into the global EV landscape.
As the demand for electric vehicles continues to grow, it is clear that the future of transportation is increasingly electric. Governments, manufacturers, and consumers are all playing a crucial role in driving this transition towards a more sustainable and cleaner future.
