Electrifying Speed: Porsche Prototype Smashes Nürburgring Record

Posted on January 3, 2024

Porsche has once again rewritten the record books with a stunning new lap time for electric vehicles at the iconic Nürburgring Nordschleife. Development driver Lars Kern, no stranger to pushing the limits of Porsche‘s machines, carved through the Green Hell in a pre-series Taycan prototype, stopping the clock at an astonishing 7:07.55 minutes.

This blistering time shatters the previous record set by Kern himself in a 2022 Taycan Turbo S equipped with the performance package by a staggering 26 seconds. As Kevin Giek, head of the Taycan model line, aptly puts it, “Twenty-six seconds is half an eternity in motorsport. Lars’ lap time of 7:07.55 minutes on the Nordschleife is sensational, putting the Taycan in the same league as electric hypercars.”

The pre-series Taycan isn’t just about breaking records; it’s a testament to Porsche’s relentless pursuit of performance and innovation. While details about the prototype’s powertrain remain under wraps, its capabilities speak for themselves. Kern reported clocking speeds 25 km/h faster than his previous record run into the Schwedenkreuz, a notoriously challenging corner. By the time he crossed the finish line, he would have barely entered the Antoniusbuche section on his 2022 lap, illustrating the car’s immense leap in performance over a 20.8 km course.

The record-breaking run wasn’t just about raw speed; Kern emphasized the car’s remarkable consistency, clocking near-identical times over multiple laps. This points to a well-balanced, finely tuned machine capable of delivering exceptional performance lap after lap.

While we eagerly await the onboard video promised for mid-March, one thing is certain: Porsche’s electric future is looking electrifyingly fast. The pre-series Taycan prototype may not be the production model just yet, but it serves as a thrilling glimpse into what Porsche has in store for the world of electric performance. Buckle up, because the future of speed is definitely plugged in.

Henry Benz isn't your average automotive journalist. He's not obsessed with horsepower or zero-to-sixty times. His passion lies in the quiet hum of electric motors, the surge of instant torque, and the thrill of a world hurtling towards a sustainable future. Henry is the EV evangelist, your plug-in pal, and the guy who will make you fall in love with the world of electric vehicles, one test drive at a time.

Henry's journey began in the golden age of muscle cars. He spent his youth wrenching on classic V8s, his nose forever stained with grease and his ears ringing with the roar of internal combustion. But as the climate crisis loomed larger, a seed of doubt sprouted in his gearhead heart. Could there be a way to enjoy the thrill of the open road without sacrificing the planet?

That's when Henry discovered the world of EVs. He was captivated by the silent power, the instant acceleration, and the sleek, futuristic designs. He devoured every article, watched every documentary, and hopped behind the wheel of every electric car he could find. He was hooked.
