Extreme E Unveils Pioneer 25: The World’s First Hydrogen Race Car

Posted on June 27, 2024

Extreme E, the electric racing series known for its focus on sustainability, has officially evolved into Extreme H, the world’s first hydrogen racing series. The groundbreaking new championship was launched in London on June 27th, 2024, with the unveiling of its centrepiece – the pioneering hydrogen race car, the aptly named Pioneer 25.

A New Era of Eco-Friendly Motorsports

The Pioneer 25 signifies a significant shift towards clean energy in motorsport. Powered by hydrogen fuel cells, it produces only water as a byproduct, completely eliminating carbon emissions. This innovative approach demonstrates that sustainability and high-octane racing can coexist.

Cutting-Edge Technology Meets Sustainable Design

The Pioneer 25 was revealed on the St Helena ship, which made its way down the Thames to dock next to HMS Belfast.

The Pioneer 25 boasts the latest advancements in automotive technology and sustainable materials, setting a new benchmark for eco-friendly design. Developed by Spark Racing Technology and featuring a hydrogen fuel cell from Symbio, the car has undergone rigorous testing to ensure peak performance.

Key Features of the Pioneer 25

  • Hydrogen Fuel Cell: A 75kW hydrogen fuel cell replaces the battery as the primary energy source, showcasing this revolutionary technology’s potential.
  • Performance: With a peak output of 400kW (550hp), the Pioneer 25 accelerates from 0-100kph in a mere 4.5 seconds and scales gradients of up to 130 percent.
  • Standardization and Customization: While core components are standardized, teams have the freedom to redesign the front and rear bodywork to reflect their brand identity.

Public Debut and Future Development

The Pioneer 25 is set for its public debut at the upcoming Extreme E Hydro X Prix in Scotland (July 13-14, 2024). Further testing is planned for the Island X Prix in Sardinia in September. The inaugural Extreme H season kicks off in April 2025, with the full race calendar and participating teams to be announced soon.

Industry Leaders Hail a Bold Step Forward

The launch of Extreme H has garnered praise from industry leaders and racing teams alike. Alejandro Agag, Extreme H’s Founder and CEO, emphasized the series’ commitment to pioneering sustainable mobility solutions and pushing the boundaries of hydrogen technology. Team owners and drivers, including Carlos Sainz, Jenson Button, and Jimmie Johnson, expressed their excitement about the innovative direction of Extreme H.

Partnerships Fueling the Future

Extreme H’s success hinges on the support of key partners. PIF, the championship’s Principal Partner for the E360 collaboration (encompassing Formula E, Extreme E, and E1), is a leading force in promoting electric motorsports. Other key partners include ENOWA (Green Hydrogen Power Partner), Vodafone Business (Official Technology Communications Partner), Siemens (providing consultancy expertise), and Jackson Swiss Partners (Exclusive Foreign Exchange Supplier).

The Hydrogen Hub: A Collaborative Effort

Extreme H is part of a broader initiative to accelerate hydrogen development. In late 2023, a collaboration between Extreme H, Formula 1, and the FIA established the “Hydrogen Hub.” This strategic alliance aims to evaluate hydrogen’s potential applications in motorsport and broader mobility sectors.

Extreme H: Pioneering a Sustainable Future

With the launch of the Pioneer 25 and the upcoming Extreme H season, the future of motorsport looks bright. Extreme H promises not only thrilling races but also a crucial step towards a sustainable future powered by hydrogen.

Henry Benz isn't your average automotive journalist. He's not obsessed with horsepower or zero-to-sixty times. His passion lies in the quiet hum of electric motors, the surge of instant torque, and the thrill of a world hurtling towards a sustainable future. Henry is the EV evangelist, your plug-in pal, and the guy who will make you fall in love with the world of electric vehicles, one test drive at a time.

Henry's journey began in the golden age of muscle cars. He spent his youth wrenching on classic V8s, his nose forever stained with grease and his ears ringing with the roar of internal combustion. But as the climate crisis loomed larger, a seed of doubt sprouted in his gearhead heart. Could there be a way to enjoy the thrill of the open road without sacrificing the planet?

That's when Henry discovered the world of EVs. He was captivated by the silent power, the instant acceleration, and the sleek, futuristic designs. He devoured every article, watched every documentary, and hopped behind the wheel of every electric car he could find. He was hooked.
