Hyundai Unveils IONIQ 5 N eN1 Cup Car, Ushering in New Era of Electric Racing

Posted on April 1, 2024

Electric vehicle racing is about to shift into high gear with the unveiling of the Hyundai IONIQ 5 N eN1 Cup car. Debuting at the practice round for the upcoming Hyundai N Festival, this innovative racer signals a turning point for sustainable motorsport.

Based on the award-winning IONIQ 5 N electric vehicle, the eN1 Cup car boasts significant upgrades for the track. It retains the production car’s robust power electronics system, renowned for its high-performance output and durability. This translates to thrilling acceleration and power, perfect for electrifying on-track battles.

“We are incredibly proud to unveil the IONIQ 5 N eN1 Cup car,” said Till Wartenberg, Vice President and Head of N Brand & Motorsport at Hyundai. “This unveiling demonstrates our commitment to sustainable racing and pushes the boundaries of what EVs can achieve on the racetrack.”

EV Racing Takes Center Stage at Hyundai N Festival

The eN1 Cup car heralds the arrival of the eN1 class, a new category within the Hyundai N Festival. This class is designed specifically for professional drivers and features open regulations, allowing teams to experiment with various tire manufacturers for optimal performance.

The eN1 Cup car itself boasts a range of racing-focused modifications. Slick tires enhance grip, while a redesigned body kit delivers superior handling and downforce. Extensive weight reduction measures, including forged wheels and lightweight body panels, keep the car nimble on the track.

For an exhilarating spectator experience, the eN1 incorporates unique audio features. Spectators can enjoy the sounds of NGB overboost, virtual gear shifts, and a specially developed amplified N Active Sound system. Each race team will have the freedom to create their own distinct soundscape, adding another layer of excitement to the competition.

Safety First in Electric Racing

Safety remains paramount, and the eN1 Cup car is equipped with a comprehensive suite of safety measures. Roll cages, racing seats, and specialized seat belts are standard components. Recognizing the unique risks associated with electric vehicles, Hyundai has also incorporated fire extinguishers specifically designed for electrical fires, asphyxiation prevention measures, and a modified charging port location.

Paving the Way for the Future of Motorsport

The Hyundai N Festival has a long history of fostering Korea’s motorsport culture. The introduction of the eN1 class marks a significant step towards a sustainable future for racing. This season will serve as a crucial trial period, allowing teams, drivers, and event officials to gain valuable experience in the world of EV racing. Infrastructure, emergency response procedures, and charging logistics will all be rigorously tested and refined.

The official competition kicks off on April 27th at Inje Speedium, with the eN1 class participating in practice sessions before its official debut in the fifth round. The season will feature a variety of race formats, including one-on-one knockout races and traditional sprints. This diverse approach will provide valuable data for optimizing future EV racing events.

“Through the eN1 class, we aim to establish Hyundai Motor as a leader in the EV motorsport platform,” said Joon Park, Head of N Brand Management Group. “We are poised to redefine the future of racing and pave the way for a new era of electrifying motorsport achievements.”

The Hyundai IONIQ 5 N eN1 Cup car marks a new chapter in electric vehicle racing. With its focus on performance, sustainability, and safety, this innovative racer promises to transform the motorsport landscape, leaving a lasting impression on race tracks around the world.
