McLaren Unveils Debut Electric Bike Range: Hypercars Take to Two Wheels

Posted on May 20, 2024

McLaren Automotive, renowned for its boundary-pushing supercars, has set its sights on a new horizon: electric bikes. Today, the company unveiled its inaugural e-bike range, a four-strong offering that brings the spirit of the brand’s high-performance vehicles to the world of two wheels.

Inspired by the award-winning supercars that bear the McLaren badge, this limited-edition range embodies the company’s design and technological prowess. Designed by the same team behind the electrified McLaren Artura, these e-bikes boast signature McLaren features like lightweight carbon-fibre frames and cutting-edge electric drivetrains.

Just like a true McLaren, these e-bikes prioritise power-to-weight ratio, a key performance metric for the brand. Their powerful motors, coupled with class-leading torque figures, promise a thrilling ride experience.

The connection to McLaren’s supercars goes beyond mere aesthetics. The design team crafted an innovative digital display that mirrors the driver interfaces found in their high-performance cars. Integrated into the handlebars, a full-colour LCD panel relays key ride data like speed, battery life, and range, ensuring optimal rider engagement.

The range comprises four distinct models – the Extreme 600, Extreme 250, Sport 600, and Sport 250 – catering to various riding styles and terrains, from city streets to off-road adventures.

The crown jewel of the collection is the McLaren 600 series, a contender for the title of the most powerful street-legal electric mountain bike. In Race mode, it unleashes up to 852W of peak power, propelling riders to a top speed of 20mph (32kph).

Two limited-edition electric mountain bikes are offered: a 29-inch hardtail version and a full-suspension model with mixed wheel sizes (29-inch front, 27.5-inch rear) and generous travel (145mm rear, 160mm fork).

Rounding out the range are the Sport models. The Sport 600W and Extreme 600W feature high-end SRAM XX Eagle Transmission 12-speed drivetrains, while the Sport 250W and Extreme 250W come equipped with mechanical SRAM GX Eagle 12-speed drivetrains.

The McLaren Sport is billed as the ideal all-purpose mountain bike, equally comfortable on smooth tarmac and challenging single tracks. It embodies pure McLaren style with its minimalist frame design and integrated componentry.

As with McLaren’s supercars, riders can choose from various power modes accessible via the integrated cockpit display:

  • Off: No motor assistance
  • Eco: Optimised for extended range
  • Trail: Balanced power and efficiency for everyday riding
  • Sport: Boosts power for demanding terrains
  • Race: Unleashes maximum power and torque

The McLaren Extreme is a full-suspension e-mountain bike built for conquering off-road challenges with maximum performance, control, and comfort. Both Sport and Extreme models come wrapped in Pirelli tyres.

Availability of McLaren e-bikes will be limited. Aspiring owners can register their interest at www.mclarenbikes.com. It’s important to note that the 600W versions will only be available for purchase in the United States.

Henry Benz isn't your average automotive journalist. He's not obsessed with horsepower or zero-to-sixty times. His passion lies in the quiet hum of electric motors, the surge of instant torque, and the thrill of a world hurtling towards a sustainable future. Henry is the EV evangelist, your plug-in pal, and the guy who will make you fall in love with the world of electric vehicles, one test drive at a time.

Henry's journey began in the golden age of muscle cars. He spent his youth wrenching on classic V8s, his nose forever stained with grease and his ears ringing with the roar of internal combustion. But as the climate crisis loomed larger, a seed of doubt sprouted in his gearhead heart. Could there be a way to enjoy the thrill of the open road without sacrificing the planet?

That's when Henry discovered the world of EVs. He was captivated by the silent power, the instant acceleration, and the sleek, futuristic designs. He devoured every article, watched every documentary, and hopped behind the wheel of every electric car he could find. He was hooked.
