New BMW 5 Series Touring Debuts with i5 All-Electric Variant

Posted on February 9, 2024

The iconic BMW 5 Series Touring is entering a new era, and this time, it’s bringing electrification along for the ride. The sixth generation of the premium wagon boasts a sleek design, spacious interior, and cutting-edge technology, with the highlight being the all-new, fully electric i5 Touring variant.

Electric Powerhouse

The i5 Touring comes in two versions: the eDrive40 with 340 horsepower and a range of up to 348 miles, and the high-performance M60 boasting 601 horsepower and a 0-62 mph time of just 3.9 seconds. Both models utilize an 81.2 kWh battery pack that can be charged at up to 205 kW, offering impressive fast-charging capabilities.

More Than Just Electric

The new 5 Series Touring isn’t just about the electric option. Traditional petrol and plug-in hybrid variants are still available, offering a wider range of choices for drivers. The Touring also boasts a larger footprint than its predecessor, translating to more space for passengers and cargo.

Tech-Savvy Interior

Inside, the Touring features a modern and driver-oriented cockpit with the BMW Curved Display, a fully digital instrument cluster and infotainment system. The latest BMW iDrive operating system with “QuickSelect” and natural language interaction keeps the driver connected and in control.

Advanced Driver Assistance

The new Touring comes equipped with a range of driver assistance features, including semi-automated driving and parking capabilities. The highlight is the optional Driving Assistant Professional, which includes features like lane control assist and distance control with stop & go function.

Availability and Pricing

The new BMW 5 Series Touring is available to order now in the UK, with the i5 eDrive40 starting at £69,040 and the i5 M60 starting at £99,090. The plug-in hybrid model will arrive later in the year.

Overall, the new BMW 5 Series Touring marks a significant step forward for the iconic wagon. With its electric option, spacious interior, and cutting-edge technology, it’s poised to appeal to a wider range of drivers than ever before.

Henry Benz isn't your average automotive journalist. He's not obsessed with horsepower or zero-to-sixty times. His passion lies in the quiet hum of electric motors, the surge of instant torque, and the thrill of a world hurtling towards a sustainable future. Henry is the EV evangelist, your plug-in pal, and the guy who will make you fall in love with the world of electric vehicles, one test drive at a time.

Henry's journey began in the golden age of muscle cars. He spent his youth wrenching on classic V8s, his nose forever stained with grease and his ears ringing with the roar of internal combustion. But as the climate crisis loomed larger, a seed of doubt sprouted in his gearhead heart. Could there be a way to enjoy the thrill of the open road without sacrificing the planet?

That's when Henry discovered the world of EVs. He was captivated by the silent power, the instant acceleration, and the sleek, futuristic designs. He devoured every article, watched every documentary, and hopped behind the wheel of every electric car he could find. He was hooked.
