Nissan has become the first car manufacturer to commit to the next generation of Formula E, solidifying its position as a leader in electric vehicle (EV) technology and racing. The announcement, made ahead of the inaugural Tokyo Formula E race, extends Nissan’s participation in the FIA Formula E World Championship until at least 2030, marking the company’s longest ever motorsport commitment.
This strategic move aligns perfectly with Nissan’s Ambition 2030 plan, a long-term vision to establish itself as a fully-fledged electric car manufacturer. The plan includes introducing a staggering 34 new EV models across all segments by 2030, with the goal of EVs comprising 40% of global sales by 2026 and a staggering 60% by the end of the decade.
Formula E provides the ideal platform for Nissan to not only showcase its innovative EV technology but also rigorously test it against fierce competition. The next generation of Formula E, known as GEN4, promises significant advancements with features like enhanced energy efficiency (up to 700kW regeneration capacity), increased power output (up to 600kW), and groundbreaking safety innovations. This commitment to sustainable racing aligns seamlessly with Nissan’s broader environmental goals.
Nissan’s presence in Formula E extends beyond the racetrack. The company boasts a global footprint, operating in every country currently on the Formula E calendar. This allows them to leverage the series’ reach to promote EV technology on a worldwide scale. Additionally, Nissan’s extensive network of R&D centers, production plants, and design studios across multiple markets further reinforces their commitment to electric mobility.
“We’re extremely pleased to continue our involvement in Formula E until 2030,” said Makoto Uchida, CEO of Nissan Motor Corporation. “The technological breakthroughs we achieve on the track will provide invaluable insights for developing our future products. We’re excited to be at the forefront of electric racing and contribute to a cleaner, safer, and more inclusive world.”
This decision reflects Nissan’s dedication to the future of Formula E. Tommaso Volpe, Managing Director and Team Principal of Nissan Formula E Team, expressed his enthusiasm: “We’re proud to be the first company to sign up until 2030. Formula E provides an incredible testing ground for new EV technology, and we’re eager to keep developing and competing until at least the end of Season 16.”
The move has been met with positive reactions from Formula E leadership. “We’re very happy to see Nissan extending their involvement,” said Formula E CEO Jeff Dodds. “Having a brand with such a global presence is vital for us. Nissan is a highly respected manufacturer that perfectly aligns with our goals and values.”
The FIA, the motorsport governing body, also expressed their support. “We’re delighted to have Nissan on board until 2030,” said Marek Nawarecki, FIA Senior Circuit Sport Director. “This commitment signifies a bright new era for Formula E.”
Nissan’s extended commitment to Formula E is a significant step towards a more sustainable future. As both Nissan and Formula E push the boundaries of electric vehicle technology, fans can expect even more thrilling races and groundbreaking innovations in the years to come.
Formula E is currently in the early stages of its tenth season, which kicked off in Mexico City in January.
