Scottish Bus Operator Shuttle Buses Switches to Electric Fleet with VEV

Posted on March 7, 2024

In a move that will significantly reduce carbon emissions and improve air quality, Scottish bus operator Shuttle Buses has announced its transition to an electric fleet with the help of e-fleet solutions provider VEV.

This collaborative effort will see VEV install electric bus chargers at Shuttle Buses‘ depot, along with their VEV-IQ smart charging platform. VEV-IQ will optimize charging schedules and ensure Shuttle Buses’ new electric vehicles (EVs) are powered by 100% renewable energy through VEV’s energy supply partner. Additionally, VEV will provide a comprehensive maintenance package to guarantee smooth operations for the new electric fleet.

Sustainability at the Core

Shuttle Buses, one of the largest operators in Ayrshire, Scotland, is committed to environmental responsibility. This initiative is projected to significantly reduce their carbon footprint by an estimated 34,000kg annually. “We are thrilled to collaborate with forward-thinking companies like Shuttle Buses to support their transition to a fully electric fleet,” said Mike Nakrani, CEO of VEV. “This project highlights the value in an integrated e-fleet solution, from charging infrastructure to renewable energy and intelligent management software.”

Planning for the Future

The partnership doesn’t stop there. VEV is planning a solar power generation and battery storage system at the Shuttle Buses depot. This on-site renewable energy source is projected to generate 148,000 kWh annually, enough to power two electric buses. The project is subject to planning permission and surveys.

A Shared Vision for Electrification

“VEV understood our environmental and business goals and offered a turnkey solution to support the electrification of our bus fleet,” said Ross Granger, Managing Director of Shuttle Buses. “We’re looking at potentially opening-up our charging infrastructure to other fleets and the VEV-IQ platform will be critical to this.” Shuttle Buses’ forward-thinking approach extends to their employee ownership structure, highlighting their commitment to a sustainable future for both the environment and their workforce.

This collaboration between VEV and Shuttle Buses serves as a model for other fleet operators looking to transition to electric vehicles. With a focus on integrated solutions, renewable energy, and future scalability, this project is a significant step towards cleaner, more sustainable transportation.

Henry Benz isn't your average automotive journalist. He's not obsessed with horsepower or zero-to-sixty times. His passion lies in the quiet hum of electric motors, the surge of instant torque, and the thrill of a world hurtling towards a sustainable future. Henry is the EV evangelist, your plug-in pal, and the guy who will make you fall in love with the world of electric vehicles, one test drive at a time.

Henry's journey began in the golden age of muscle cars. He spent his youth wrenching on classic V8s, his nose forever stained with grease and his ears ringing with the roar of internal combustion. But as the climate crisis loomed larger, a seed of doubt sprouted in his gearhead heart. Could there be a way to enjoy the thrill of the open road without sacrificing the planet?

That's when Henry discovered the world of EVs. He was captivated by the silent power, the instant acceleration, and the sleek, futuristic designs. He devoured every article, watched every documentary, and hopped behind the wheel of every electric car he could find. He was hooked.
