Tesla Unleashes a Track-Focused Monster: The New Model 3 Performance

Posted on April 25, 2024

Tesla has unveiled a comprehensive refresh of its high-performance Model 3 variant, aiming to elevate the electric sedan into a true driver’s machine.

The headline improvement lies in a next-generation drive unit boasting over 460 horsepower, a significant jump from the previous iteration. This translates to a blistering 0-60 mph time of just 2.9 seconds, shaving a crucial half-second off the earlier model. The car’s top speed reaches an impressive 163 mph.

While the raw power is enticing, Tesla emphasizes that the upgrades go beyond straight-line acceleration. A bespoke chassis featuring increased stiffness and revised suspension components promises a more responsive and confidence-inspiring driving experience. This is further bolstered by a new set of staggered 20-inch wheels wrapped in high-performance summer tires, optimizing traction and handling during spirited driving.

One of the most significant additions is Tesla’s all-new adaptive damping system. Integrated with the company’s Vehicle Dynamics Controller (VDC), this technology dynamically adjusts suspension stiffness to deliver optimal handling without sacrificing everyday comfort. This represents a first for the Model 3 and signifies Tesla’s commitment to providing a well-rounded performance package.

Another area receiving significant attention is braking. The new Model 3 Performance comes standard with track-ready brake pads, offering improved stopping power and higher thermal resistance for sustained performance during aggressive driving. The inclusion of red brake calipers adds a touch of visual flair that complements the car’s overall sporty character.

Tesla hasn’t forgotten about those who plan to take their Model 3 Performance to the track. The latest iteration features an upgraded Track Mode V3 that integrates motor and suspension controls, powertrain cooling, and the VDC into a single, unified system. This allows drivers to fine-tune handling balance, stability control, and regenerative braking for a customized on-track experience.

Visually, the new Model 3 Performance receives a distinctive makeover. The front and rear fascia boast a more aggressive design that incorporates integrated cooling ducts. These work in conjunction with a rear diffuser and a carbon-fiber spoiler to optimize aerodynamic efficiency and high-speed stability. Stepping inside, the cabin features new sport seats with enhanced side bolsters for improved lateral support during cornering. These seats are also heated and ventilated for added comfort. Unique carbon fiber trim with a bespoke weave pattern further distinguishes the Performance variant from its standard siblings.

This revamped Model 3 Performance signifies a clear shift in Tesla’s approach to the high-performance segment. The car goes beyond simply offering raw power and delves into the realm of meticulously crafted driving dynamics. With a starting price of £59,990 in the UK, the Model 3 Performance positions itself as a compelling option for drivers seeking an electric sports sedan that delivers thrills on both the road and the track.
