Tesla Unveils New Model Y Variant: Setting a Benchmark for Efficiency

Posted on October 4, 2024

Tesla has announced a new addition to the Model Y lineup – the most efficient Model Y ever produced. This rear-wheel drive variant boasts an impressive 373 miles (WLTP) of range and a class-leading energy consumption of 4 miles per kWh, setting a new standard for electric SUVs.

Focus on Efficiency and Affordability

Starting at £46,990 or £349* per month, the Model Y Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive prioritizes maximum range at an accessible price point. The single rear motor, paired with a high-density battery pack, a standard heat pump, and low-resistance tires, contributes to outstanding efficiency and establishes a new benchmark for cost per mile in the electric SUV segment.

For drivers who utilize off-peak charging rates, the potential savings are significant. With an EV electricity tariff like Intelligent Octopus Go at 7p per kWh, an owner driving 10,000 miles annually could spend as little as £174.61 on home charging for the Model Y Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive. This translates to less than £200 per year for charging costs, eliminating a major concern for many potential electric car buyers.

Making the Best-Seller Even More Accessible

This new variant reflects Tesla‘s dedication to continuous improvement through economies of scale and innovative engineering. It aligns with the company’s mission to accelerate sustainable energy adoption, aiming for strong residual value for long-term ownership and affordable financing options.

Packed with Features and Functionality

Produced at the Berlin-Brandenburg Gigafactory, the Model Y Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive inherits the features that propelled the Model Y to the top-selling car globally in 2023. The interior boasts premium materials for comfort, complemented by a studio-quality sound system paired with streaming apps.

The Tesla app allows drivers to remotely pre-heat or cool the vehicle, ensuring a comfortable cabin temperature before setting off. The built-in Trip Planner seamlessly integrates charging stops into navigation, allowing drivers to reach their destination efficiently.

Robust Charging Infrastructure Ensures Convenience

As with all Tesla vehicles, the Model Y Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive has access to the world’s largest and most reliable ultra-fast charging network: the Tesla Supercharger network. With 150 locations and over 1,600 stalls in the UK alone, combined with convenient home charging options (Tesla Wall Connector) and the ever-expanding public charging infrastructure, UK customers have access to a comprehensive network for daily and on-the-go charging.

Test Drives Available Now

In-market test drives for the Model Y Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive have commenced, with deliveries expected to begin shortly. This new variant promises to further enhance the Model Y’s appeal, offering an unrivaled combination of efficiency, affordability, and range, solidifying its position as a leader in the electric SUV market.

Henry Benz isn't your average automotive journalist. He's not obsessed with horsepower or zero-to-sixty times. His passion lies in the quiet hum of electric motors, the surge of instant torque, and the thrill of a world hurtling towards a sustainable future. Henry is the EV evangelist, your plug-in pal, and the guy who will make you fall in love with the world of electric vehicles, one test drive at a time.

Henry's journey began in the golden age of muscle cars. He spent his youth wrenching on classic V8s, his nose forever stained with grease and his ears ringing with the roar of internal combustion.
