Volkswagen Group Announces Affordable €20,000 Electric Cars for Europe

Posted on May 29, 2024

The Volkswagen Group has unveiled a new project aimed at making electric vehicles (EVs) more accessible across Europe. The initiative, dubbed “all-electric entry-level mobility,” promises a new breed of affordable electric cars priced at around €20,000 (£17,500), with a world premiere set for 2027.

This move underscores the Volkswagen Group‘s commitment to democratising electric mobility. “Generations of people associate the strong brands of the Volkswagen Group with their first car – and with affordable mobility,” said Oliver Blume, CEO of Volkswagen Group. “We continue to assume this social responsibility… It’s about entry-level electric mobility from Europe for Europe.”

Focus on affordability without sacrificing quality

While affordability is a key focus, the Volkswagen Group emphasises that these new EVs won’t compromise on quality. Thomas Schäfer, CEO of the Volkswagen brand and head of the Brand Group Core, stated: “Our brand promise is: electromobility for all. Despite the attractive price, our electric cars will set standards in the entry-level segment in terms of technology, design, quality, and customer experience.”

Achieving this balance in a climate of rising material costs is a challenge Schäfer acknowledges. “This task has become more demanding due to rising energy, material, and raw material costs,” he said. “Electromobility from Europe for Europe can only succeed with political support and competitive framework conditions.”

Localisation and sustainability benefits

The project prioritises a high degree of localisation within Europe, aiming to not only keep costs down but also benefit the continent’s industrial landscape. This focus on local production also reduces reliance on long-distance component transportation, resulting in lower CO2 emissions.

Building on existing electric vehicle initiatives

This announcement builds on the Volkswagen Group’s existing efforts to make EVs more accessible. The “Electric Urban Car Family” project, due by the end of 2025, will see the introduction of four electric cars priced under €25,000 (around £21,900). This family will include two compact cars (one from Volkswagen and one from CUPRA), alongside two small SUVs (one each from Škoda and Volkswagen). All four vehicles will be produced in Spain.

The new €20,000 electric car project represents a significant step forward for the Volkswagen Group’s electrification ambitions. By offering compelling electric vehicles at attainable price points, the Group hopes to accelerate the adoption of electric mobility across Europe.

Henry Benz isn't your average automotive journalist. He's not obsessed with horsepower or zero-to-sixty times. His passion lies in the quiet hum of electric motors, the surge of instant torque, and the thrill of a world hurtling towards a sustainable future. Henry is the EV evangelist, your plug-in pal, and the guy who will make you fall in love with the world of electric vehicles, one test drive at a time.

Henry's journey began in the golden age of muscle cars. He spent his youth wrenching on classic V8s, his nose forever stained with grease and his ears ringing with the roar of internal combustion. But as the climate crisis loomed larger, a seed of doubt sprouted in his gearhead heart. Could there be a way to enjoy the thrill of the open road without sacrificing the planet?

That's when Henry discovered the world of EVs. He was captivated by the silent power, the instant acceleration, and the sleek, futuristic designs. He devoured every article, watched every documentary, and hopped behind the wheel of every electric car he could find. He was hooked.
