In a move that strengthens its commitment to sustainability, Volkswagen Group UK (VWG UK) has signed an agreement with Ecobat, the global leader in battery recycling, to collect and recycle electric vehicle (EV) batteries. This collaborative effort establishes a vital closed-loop system for EV batteries in the UK, promoting a circular economy and minimizing environmental impact.
This partnership builds upon a pre-existing relationship between the two companies. Since 2014, Ecobat has been collecting lead-acid batteries for VWG UK’s parts provider, TPS. In 2019, the collaboration expanded to include high-voltage battery processing and upgrades at Ecobat’s UK Diagnostics and Disassembly Centre.
Now, under the new agreement, Ecobat will take on the responsibility of collecting and recycling lithium-ion battery materials from used EV batteries. This includes batteries from Volkswagen dealerships, distributors, and end-of-life recycling centers, using Ecobat’s specialized and compliant vehicles. The collected batteries will then be processed at Ecobat’s brand new UK lithium-ion recycling facility, the third of its kind globally for the company, alongside existing facilities in Germany and Arizona.
“As we move towards decarbonizing road transport, the number of EVs on the road is rapidly increasing,” said Sylvain Charbonnier, Director of One Aftersales for Volkswagen Group UK. “This agreement with Ecobat ensures responsible management of batteries throughout their lifecycle, reassuring our dealers and customers that we are committed to achieving our electrification goals sustainably.”
Expressing enthusiasm for the expanded partnership, Elliott Ethridge, Vice President of Global Sales for Ecobat, stated, “We are delighted to extend our relationship with VWG UK and contribute to the responsible recycling of EV batteries.” He further highlighted the company’s expertise in handling various types of batteries and recovering valuable materials, ultimately benefiting both Volkswagen and the environment.
This collaboration aligns perfectly with Volkswagen AG’s global commitment to sustainability. As the first major automotive company to commit to the Paris Agreement goals, Volkswagen has set ambitious targets for decarbonization and e-mobility. By 2030, they aim to offer 50 fully electric models, backed by a €180 billion investment in digitalization and electrification by 2027. Currently, VWG UK is the market leader in electric vehicle sales in the UK, offering 15 EVs and accounting for over 20% of all passenger car BEV registrations in 2023.
Ecobat’s approach to battery recycling adheres to all UK battery regulations and manages extended producer responsibility (EPR) on behalf of VWG UK. The company prioritizes environmental responsibility by adhering to strict quality assurance standards for safety and environmental practices, including ISO certifications for quality management, environmental management, and health and safety.
This partnership between VWG UK and Ecobat is a significant step towards establishing a sustainable closed-loop system for EV batteries in the UK. Through responsible battery collection, recycling, and reuse, this collaboration aims to minimize environmental impact and create a more sustainable future for electric mobility.
