Volvo Cars’ flagship EX90 electric SUV hits the road

Posted on September 4, 2024

Volvo Cars has officially launched its highly anticipated EX90 SUV, marking a significant milestone in the company’s transition to fully electric vehicles. The first batch of the EX90 is now being shipped to retailers in the United States and Europe, with deliveries to customers expected to commence before the end of this month.

The EX90, Volvo Cars‘ new flagship, sets a new benchmark for the company in terms of safety, sustainability, and innovative technology. The SUV has been rigorously tested in various conditions, including a cross-country road trip across the United States.

Abbey Road Studios Mode – coming to the Volvo EX90

“Based on this trip, I can confidently say that the EX90 is the best car we have ever made,” said Jim Rowan, Chief Executive of Volvo Cars. “It’s a testament to our global engineering capabilities and reaffirms our position as a leader in the ongoing technology shift in the car industry.”

A Paradigm Shift

The EX90 represents a significant departure from previous Volvo models. Powered by a core system built on the NVIDIA DRIVE platform, the SUV boasts advanced AI capabilities, enhanced safety features, and seamless connectivity. The in-car computer, combined with the Snapdragon Cockpit Platform and Volvo Cars’ proprietary software, delivers a more responsive and intuitive driving experience.

Equipped with a range of sensors, including radars, cameras, and a lidar, the EX90 is designed to continuously improve its functionality through over-the-air software updates. This means that the SUV will evolve over time, adapting to the changing needs of its owners.

“The Volvo EX90 embodies our future as a fully electric car maker,” said Jim Rowan. “It’s a car that continuously gets better over time thanks to core computing and software updates.”

Key Features and Specifications

The EX90 boasts a range of impressive features, including:

  • Battery Range: Up to 600 km (WLTP)
  • Safety: Advanced passive and active safety technology, including lidar
  • Connectivity: Built-in Google services and 5G connectivity
  • Charging: Bi-directional charging capability
  • Audio: Abbey Road Studios mode with optional Bowers & Wilkins audio system

Production and Global Expansion

Production of the EX90 commenced earlier this year at Volvo Cars’ manufacturing plant in South Carolina, USA. The plant has the capacity to produce up to 150,000 cars per year and has undergone significant investments to accommodate the production of electric vehicles.

New Volvo EX90 on the road

Volvo Cars plans to ramp up deliveries of the EX90 to more markets between the fourth quarter of this year and the first quarter of 2025. The SUV is expected to play a crucial role in the company’s transition to a fully electric future.

Henry Benz isn't your average automotive journalist. He's not obsessed with horsepower or zero-to-sixty times. His passion lies in the quiet hum of electric motors, the surge of instant torque, and the thrill of a world hurtling towards a sustainable future. Henry is the EV evangelist, your plug-in pal, and the guy who will make you fall in love with the world of electric vehicles, one test drive at a time.

Henry's journey began in the golden age of muscle cars. He spent his youth wrenching on classic V8s, his nose forever stained with grease and his ears ringing with the roar of internal combustion. But as the climate crisis loomed larger, a seed of doubt sprouted in his gearhead heart. Could there be a way to enjoy the thrill of the open road without sacrificing the planet?

That's when Henry discovered the world of EVs. He was captivated by the silent power, the instant acceleration, and the sleek, futuristic designs. He devoured every article, watched every documentary, and hopped behind the wheel of every electric car he could find. He was hooked.
