Volvo Begins US Production Of EX90 Electric SUV

Posted on June 7, 2024

Volvo Cars has kicked off production of its highly anticipated EX90 electric SUV at its Charleston, South Carolina plant, marking a significant milestone for the brand. This flagship model signifies not only an expansion of Volvo‘s EV portfolio but also a technological leap forward with the introduction of core computing for enhanced safety.

The first customer-bound EX90 rolled off the production line this week, a head-turning Denim Blue model destined for an American buyer later this year. “The fully electric Volvo EX90 ushers in a new era for Volvo Cars, one focused on safety, sustainability, and human-centric technology,” declared Jim Rowan, Volvo Cars’ Chief Executive. “The EX90, proudly manufactured in the USA, underscores our long-term commitment to our South Carolina workforce and the broader US market.”

A Commitment to American Manufacturing

Volvo’s Charleston plant, established in 2018, embodies the company’s dedication to the US market. This facility, situated near the historic city of Charleston, currently produces both the EX90 and the S60 sedan, boasting a production capacity of 150,000 vehicles annually.

Recent years have seen substantial investments in the Charleston plant, with significant upgrades and expansions to the body and paint shops. Notably, the facility now features a state-of-the-art battery pack production line. These investments solidify Volvo’s commitment to South Carolina and the US, where the brand has maintained a presence for nearly 70 years through a network of 281 dealerships across 47 states.

Born Electric and Packed with Innovation

The EX90 rides on Volvo’s next-generation, dedicated electric vehicle platform, promising a driving range of up to 600 kilometres (373 miles) on a single charge according to the WLTP test cycle. This all-electric SUV is designed to be the safest Volvo yet, equipped with cutting-edge passive and active safety systems along with advanced software powered by a comprehensive sensor suite.

Embracing Scandinavian design principles, the EX90 boasts a modern silhouette that prioritizes safety, efficiency, and aesthetics. This true seven-seater offers ample space, versatility, and comfort, making it the perfect companion for families.

The EX90 features a powerful core computing system, ensuring constant connectivity and the ability to improve over time through software updates. These updates, developed by Volvo’s AI-powered software engineers and informed by real-time data collection, represent the company’s commitment to staying at the forefront of the automotive technology revolution.

The Road Ahead

The arrival of the EX90 marks a pivotal moment for Volvo Cars, signifying the brand’s unwavering dedication to electrification and technological advancement. With US production now underway, American customers can eagerly anticipate the arrival of this groundbreaking electric SUV in dealerships later this year.
