Volvo Cars is accelerating its journey towards an all-electric future with a series of updates to its UK model range. The most significant change is a revamped naming structure that brings consistency across the brand’s electric vehicles (EVs).
Previously known as the C40 Recharge and XC40 Recharge, the fully electric versions of these popular SUVs have been renamed the EC40 and EX40, respectively. This aligns them with the existing EX30 and upcoming EX90 models, creating a clear and unified EV family identity. The XC40 name remains for the mild-hybrid petrol variants.
Performance and Range Take Center Stage
The updates go beyond aesthetics. Both the EC40 and EX40 now boast a new Single Motor Extended Range powertrain option. This configuration delivers an impressive driving range of up to 346 miles for the EC40 and 343 miles for the EX40, a significant improvement over the earlier models. This extended range is achieved thanks to a larger 78kWh battery pack and a 252hp electric motor. Additionally, a 140kW maximum charging speed ensures quick and convenient battery replenishment.

For those seeking a sportier driving experience, Volvo is introducing an optional Performance software upgrade for the EC40 and EX40 Twin Motor versions. This upgrade boosts power output from 408hp to 442hp, offering quicker acceleration and a new Performance drive mode to unlock the car’s full potential. This upgrade will be available not only for new models but also to existing owners of previous-year C40 and XC40 Recharge vehicles, making it a welcome addition for Volvo’s loyal customer base.
Simplified Options and Sustainable Enhancements
Volvo is streamlining its pricing structure, offering like-for-like on-the-road prices for the EC40 and EX40 across various trim levels. Additionally, the brand is phasing out the “Recharge” designation for all plug-in hybrid models, reflecting their focus on electric powertrains.
Sustainability remains a core focus for Volvo. The XC60 plug-in hybrid line-up now benefits from a more efficient B5 mild-hybrid petrol engine, resulting in reduced fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. Additionally, XC60 PHEVs are now manufactured in Sweden, contributing to a more sustainable production process.

These updates solidify Volvo’s commitment to an electric future. With a clear and consistent naming scheme, impressive range improvements, and a focus on performance and sustainability, Volvo is well-positioned to attract environmentally conscious drivers seeking a premium electric vehicle experience. The company recently ceased producing diesel-powered cars.
